Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands to Abdicate her thron for son

In the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix made a major announcement at 19.00pm today on a pre-recorded address broadcast. 

The queen who will be 75 on Thursday the 31st of January has finally decided to pass the throne over to her son Willem-Alexander.

The Queen states that she has been thinking about this day for several years. Queen Beatrix  has been on the throne since 1980 when her mother abdicated and now the time has finally come for her to pass the responsibility of being the monarch to her son and finally rest.

She is the sixth monarch in House of Orange-Nassau which has ruled the Netherlands since the 19th century;  This will make Willem- Alexander the 7th monarch of the House of Orange -Nassau.
